Buyer beware, Oct 26, 2007, 09:53 AM Reviewer: Thom
Let me start off by stating that I am a picky person. I am also a frugal and somewhat cheap person. Quite often those two characteristics do not work well with each other. This would be one of those occasions when it did not work out.
The Ghost case offered what I thought would be nice replacement for my well worn DS Lite case. The price appealed to my frugal side and the look appealed to my aesthetic side.
The Ghost case arrived and I excitedly embarked upon my DS facelift. I soon became aware, though, of the problems with my cheap side winning out.
The casting itself seems fairly clean and with few blemishes, however there are problems with the parts lining up easily and when I tried to marry some of the parts that were needed from my old DS case, the alignment issues were even worse. For the record, the biggest problem was that the screw posts were too short and parts were left floating above the post instead of being held tightly to the case.
Before totally dismantling my old friend, I tried a few other parts to see how they aligned and the Ghost case's fate was sealed. Specifically the battery would not seat properly into the cavity in the case. You could force it down, but it would pop out again, at least until you wrestled it into submission with the cover.
This is not my first case replacement and I know that there are good quality castings out there that match almost exactly the OEM case, stud for stud. I am giving up the Ghost and going to try the Shock! case for the DS. The fact is I am too cheap to go out and buy a whole new DS, but picky enough to want the case I choose to look as good as or better than the original one.
In conclusion, I would say that for the 20 bucks I spent on it, if I were a little less picky or even more adventurous about modding the mod, this case would have suited me just fine. But I am picky and I also believe that when I buy something that is supposed to be a replacement, it should do that, replace the original without having to fiddle with the thing.
I give the Ghost case a conservative 2 out of five.
